Calatagan’s sea is a source of food, livelihood, heritage, and opportunity for generations of coastal families.
Its coral reefs, seagrass beds, mangroves, and diverse marine life form an interconnected ecosystem that must be protected if fishing communities are to thrive.
Responsible fishing means taking from the sea while giving it the opportunity to replenish. By respecting marine protected areas, fishing seasons, species, habitats, and sustainable practices, we help ensure that today’s catch does not come at the expense of tomorrow’s fishermen.

With more than 6,600 registered fisherfolk, thousands of families depend directly and indirectly on the sea for food, livelihood, and economic security.
For generations, Calatagan’s fishing communities have been more than users of the sea—they have been its coastal protectors and carries an even greater responsibility.

Where Biodiversity, Livelihood and Heritage Thrive Together
Calatagan is home to 12 Marine Protected Areas and other important coastal habitats, including mangroves and seagrass ecosystems that serve as nurseries, feeding grounds, and refuge for marine life.
Calatagan is also part of the greater Verde Island Passage marine corridor, one of the world’s most extraordinary centers of marine biodiversity.

Protecting Our Seas. Strengthening Communities.
Protecting these areas is therefore not simply a local clean-up effort. It is an investment in the health of a much larger marine ecosystem.
Seasonal currents, tides, storms, and typhoons carry plastics, fishing materials, bottles, packaging, Styrofoam, and other debris into the area.
Eventually, this waste becomes trapped in:
- Mangrove roots
- Seagrass beds
- Shorelines
- Coral habitats
- Underwater environments
